David Loo became the first live-in caretaker at Mount Pleasant Neighbourhood House in 1997. He resided on the third floor, which has since been converted into office space for staff.

Veronica, a Colombian university professor and consultant, moved to Canada seeking community while learning English. Through Entre Mujeres at Mount Pleasant Neighbourhood House, she gained support, language practice, and practical guidance. She later became a volunteer, teaching business skills, supporting peers, and building confidence among newcomers while continuing her professional career.

After moving to Vancouver in 2019, Karen Abdelwahed discovered a life-changing source of connection through Mount Pleasant Neighbourhood House’s Sing & Grow program. What began as a chance to bond with her infant son blossomed into a supportive community of friends, resources, and opportunities. Through MPNH’s family programs and parenting support, Karen gained confidence, connection, and joy, helping her family thrive and creating lasting memories.

Salma arrived in Canada from Afghanistan in 2022 with five young children and little English. Through MPNH’s tutoring and family support programs, she gained language skills, confidence, and community connections. Her children also benefited from educational support. Today, Salma continues learning English and values MPNH’s holistic approach to helping families thrive.

Ruth Suárez arrived in Vancouver from Mexico 25 years ago seeking community and found a second home at Mount Pleasant Neighbourhood House. Inspired by the kindness of Shirley and the dedication of Morie Ford, who supported her family and son, Ruth now helps newcomers herself. She hopes MPNH remains welcoming, supportive, and caring.

After moving to Canada and becoming a first-time mother, Dania Gomez felt isolated and overwhelmed. Encouraged by a counsellor, she joined programs at Mount Pleasant Neighbourhood House, where she found parenting support, friendship, and confidence. The programs helped both Dania and her daughter Eireann thrive, giving them community, connection, and a lasting sense of belonging.

When Grade 11 overwhelmed Sara, MPNH’s free Homework Club provided personalized tutoring, rebuilding her confidence and academic success. Dedicated staff and tutors offered crucial support, helping students learn, connect, and thrive.

Karla Gangotena arrived in Vancouver from Ecuador two years ago and struggled with isolation, language barriers, and cultural adjustment. Through Mount Pleasant Neighbourhood House, she found community, support, and leadership opportunities. Today, Karla facilitates Spanish-language workshops, helping other newcomers build connection, confidence, and a sense of belonging.

George Jolly, a former community board member, said he has always felt welcome at Mount Pleasant and never excluded because of his race. He values the neighbourhood’s long history of diversity and believes the neighbourhood house excels at bringing together people from many cultural backgrounds.
