Wendy joined Mount Pleasant Neighbourhood House after becoming a mother, beginning with Family Drop-In programs before losing her voice unexpectedly. Transitioning to childcare and preschool, she discovered her passion supporting children’s development, especially those with diverse abilities. Wendy hopes MPNH continues expanding inclusive, welcoming programs that strengthen families and enrich the community.

Mariana immigrated from Argentina to Canada in 2016 and quickly embraced community volunteering. Through Mount Pleasant Neighbourhood House, she improved her English, gained mentorship, launched community projects, secured employment, started a business, and became a mentor for immigrant women. Her journey reflects the power of community, leadership, resilience, and giving back.

Cam began volunteering with Mount Pleasant Neighbourhood House’s Family Literacy Outreach Program while pursuing his PhD at UBC. Paired with an Afghan refugee family, he adapted lessons to their everyday goals, making learning practical and personal. The experience transformed both the family and Cam, reinforcing the power of community, connection, and meaningful volunteer relationships.

Nargiz Azizova found more than childcare at Mount Pleasant Neighbourhood House, she found belonging. After her nonspeaking son, Alikhan, who is on the autism spectrum, was welcomed with patience, individualized support, and genuine care, he gained confidence, routines, and social skills. Staff partnered with Nargiz to better understand and support him, easing her fears. She hopes MPNH’s compassionate, inclusive culture continues to support families for generations to come.

Rocio has been connected to Mount Pleasant Neighbourhood House since childhood, when it supported her single mother and provided childcare, youth programs, and early leadership experiences. Now a nonprofit financial literacy professional and MPNH board member, she supports newcomer and women-focused initiatives. She values its inclusive, evolving impact and sees it as a lifelong community anchor.

After the pandemic, Louise Phillips volunteered at Mount Pleasant Neighbourhood House, teaching English to senior newcomers. Drawing on personal experience, she helped transform a silent conversation group into a supportive learning community. With staff collaboration, students gained confidence, while Louise found belonging, purpose, and appreciation for MPNH’s welcoming, community-centered approach.

David Loo became the first live-in caretaker at Mount Pleasant Neighbourhood House in 1997. He resided on the third floor, which has since been converted into office space for staff.

Veronica, a Colombian university professor and consultant, moved to Canada seeking community while learning English. Through Entre Mujeres at Mount Pleasant Neighbourhood House, she gained support, language practice, and practical guidance. She later became a volunteer, teaching business skills, supporting peers, and building confidence among newcomers while continuing her professional career.

After moving to Vancouver in 2019, Karen Abdelwahed discovered a life-changing source of connection through Mount Pleasant Neighbourhood House’s Sing & Grow program. What began as a chance to bond with her infant son blossomed into a supportive community of friends, resources, and opportunities. Through MPNH’s family programs and parenting support, Karen gained confidence, connection, and joy, helping her family thrive and creating lasting memories.
