When Grade 11 overwhelmed Sara, MPNH’s free Homework Club provided personalized tutoring, rebuilding her confidence and academic success. Dedicated staff and tutors offered crucial support, helping students learn, connect, and thrive.

Karla Gangotena arrived in Vancouver from Ecuador two years ago and struggled with isolation, language barriers, and cultural adjustment. Through Mount Pleasant Neighbourhood House, she found community, support, and leadership opportunities. Today, Karla facilitates Spanish-language workshops, helping other newcomers build connection, confidence, and a sense of belonging.

George Jolly, a former community board member, said he has always felt welcome at Mount Pleasant and never excluded because of his race. He values the neighbourhood’s long history of diversity and believes the neighbourhood house excels at bringing together people from many cultural backgrounds.

For Eliza and Rob Trendiak, finding a spot at Mount Pleasant Neighbourhood House’s Hamber Childcare program felt like winning the lottery. Beyond affordable care, they discovered a supportive community where their children thrive through creativity, exploration, and friendship. The educators nurture both kids and parents, giving the Trendiaks confidence, connection, and peace of mind.

Vanessa Guerrero came to Mount Pleasant Neighbourhood House searching for employment but discovered friendship, opportunity, and purpose. After earning her first Canadian job there, she continued volunteering, helping newcomers and supporting women entrepreneurs through Spanish-language business workshops and community programs.

After arriving from Mexico during the pandemic, Susana rebuilt her confidence and career through Mount Pleasant Neighbourhood House programs, becoming an Early Childhood Education Aide while gaining parenting tools, lasting friendships, and opportunities that helped both her and her son thrive in Canada.

Dave Adair, the former director of the Neighbourhood House, was a creative visionary, woodworker, and outdoorsman who inspired others through his collaborative leadership style and passion for building community. His sudden passing brought significant change and challenges to the House, but his dream and legacy continued to influence and sustain it.
