Tulia’s connection with Mount Pleasant Neighbourhood House began in 1997, when she enrolled her daughter in its welcoming preschool. Inspired by MPNH’s inclusive values throughout her social services career, she eventually became Executive Director, championing belonging, dignity, and community. Today, Tulia’s legacy continues as she hopes MPNH remains a model for creating safe, inclusive neighbourhoods where everyone belongs.

Darlina Ycaro discovered healing through dance and turned her experience into a lifelong commitment to community. At Mount Pleasant Neighbourhood House, she became a line dance teacher, walking-club leader, gardener, birthday organizer and mentor. She helped seniors stay connected during COVID-19 and trained new dance instructors. Most importantly, MPNH gave Darlina a sense of belonging and welcomed her ideas, allowing her to enrich the community while rebuilding her own life.

Vinaya and Vinayak found community and opportunity at Mount Pleasant Neighbourhood House after immigrating to Canada. Through MPNH, they launched a business, accessed affordable childcare and family programs, and saw their daughter embrace local culture while expressing herself. Their experience highlights how MPNH helps newcomer families build connections, community, and confidence.

Barb Small began volunteering with Mount Pleasant Neighbourhood House’s Family Literacy program in 2017, helping newcomer families improve their English. Her first learner, a young mother from Mexico, turned out to know Barb’s son David, who delivered rescued food to her family. Inspired by these connections, Barb continues volunteering, finding joy in supporting newcomers and learning from their experiences.

Adam and Morgan lived across from MPNH but only understood its role after enrolling their daughter Sasha in preschool during the pandemic. Staff supported the family emotionally and practically, helping with funding and registration. Sasha thrived, making friends and enjoying new experiences. The family hopes MPNH continues fostering intergenerational connections and community support.

Fernanda Gonzalez taught herself to make flan during pregnancy, turning her passion into Sweet BelliMo, a Latin American dessert business. Through Mount Pleasant Neighbourhood House’s Women in Motion program, she gained skills, confidence, and community support. Selling successfully at the Christmas Market, she continues growing her business while inspiring other newcomer women entrepreneurs.

Kate’s connection with Mount Pleasant Neighbourhood House began 40 years ago through a free youth leadership program that made her feel welcomed and accepted. The experience inspired a lifelong career working with children, shaped family connections, and ultimately led her back to the neighbourhood house movement, where she now serves as a childcare director with deep gratitude.

After feeling isolated during the pandemic, Cora visited Mount Pleasant Neighbourhood House and was welcomed with kindness. Inspired, she began leading multicultural workshops that brought seniors together through music, dance, and cultural traditions. Her programs reduced loneliness, built community, and fostered intergenerational and intercultural connections, proving small acts can transform lives.

Andrea Hoces Maldonado found a sense of home at Mount Pleasant Neighbourhood House after immigrating from Chile. She became a volunteer, built lasting friendships, and now leads zine workshops encouraging reflection, storytelling, and community. Andrea believes small acts of creativity and kindness can bring people together, and hopes the neighbourhood house continues nurturing those moments.
