Chalk the Walk for World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD)
On Monday, June 15, 2026 Mount Pleasant Neighborhood House (MPNH) held a "Chalk the Walk" event for World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD).
On the sidewalks outside our front entrance, staff and volunteers wrote messages and chalked symbols to raise awareness of elder abuse. The activity sparked important conversations about the abuse elders face while also celebrating the strength, wisdom and resilience of seniors in our community through uplifting messages.
We were not alone in this action.
Multiple community organizations and local businesses joined us to show their support for older adults, including the Association of Neighborhood Houses of BC, Baby D's Daycare, Brightside Community Homes Foundation, Broadway Youth Resource Centre, Cycling without Age, Kingsgate Mall, Little Mountain Neighborhood House, Mount Pleasant Community Centre, Mount Pleasant Community Policing Centre, Mount Pleasant Business Improvement Association, Pharmasave on Main Street, Playground Studio, and THIS gallery.
Together, we transformed sidewalks throughout our neighbourhood into welcoming and resourceful spaces committed to understanding, preventing, and responding to the abuse and neglect of older adults.
We are grateful to everyone who showed up for older adults and seniors across the community. If you are heading out for a walk this week, try to see if you can spot any WEAAD sidewalks!
