Empowering All Ages Through Literacy (Impact Story 2024 - 2025)

Rahima and her journey at FLO

The Family Literacy Outreach (FLO) Program at MPNH supports families by providing a refurbished computer, opportunities for meaningful social connection, and a flexible, accessible way to learn English from home. Rahima is one of the many individuals who have benefitted from this program.

Rahima is originally from Afghanistan, but she had to flee due to the rising and ongoing conflict in her home country. She and her husband left everything behind and came to Canada to create a better future for her children.

A social worker referred Rahima to FLO as the language barrier posed significant difficulties in navigating her family’s everyday life. The photograph shows a typical Friday morning for Rahima - meeting with her FLO tutor online while also taking care of her 2-year-old son. With Rahima’s determination and the help of her tutor, her English skills have grown and she has been able to independently attend doctor's appointments and parent-teacher conferences. Most recently, she successfully completed Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada Level 4 - this achievement opens another door for her to continue to learn English.

Tech Cafe at Mount Pleasant

Our department was able to temporarily (through the end of March 2025) expand to serve our participants on Wednesdays as well as Thursdays.

Our volunteers continued to do amazing educational work, aiding dozens of participants in safely using their phones and computers in six different languages.

It's incredible to watch them create the bonds that make for best education practices between a tutor and learner, and to also see them grow in their own knowledge and connection to their communities.
