Empowering All Ages Through Literacy (Impact Story 2024 - 2025)
The Family Literacy Outreach (FLO) Program at MPNH supports families with refurbished computers, social connection, and flexible English learning from home. Rahima, originally from Afghanistan, is one of many who gained confidence and independence through FLO.
This year, Tech Café expanded to two days weekly, with volunteers supporting participants in six languages, helping families use technology safely while building bonds that foster learning, confidence, and stronger community connections.

When Zahra Jalali immigrated to Canada 10 years ago, she already had a degree in English translation from her home country of Iran. She soon realized, however, that knowing and using a language were very different things, and enrolled in English as an Additional Language (EAL) courses at Vancouver Community College (VCC).
Celebrating literacy with food, games and African dancing
Newcomer families and their volunteer tutors gathered together at Mount Pleasant Neighbourhood House on July 18. With Scrabble games, jelly beans and vegetarian biryani, they celebrated all the hard work the families had completed over winter and spring, as they learned English.
