Get to know our volunteer of the month, Emilsen!

What do I do in my role as a volunteer?

I support several MPNH programs, including Between Women, Tech Café, and Latin Seniors (Alelis). My role involves helping activities and workshops run smoothly, as well as teaching and guiding adults and seniors in technology-related topics. I enjoy helping participants develop digital skills that make them feel more confident and independent in their daily lives.

When did you begin volunteering at MPNH?

I began volunteering with MPNH on November 13, 2024.

Why do you volunteer?

I chose to volunteer because I believe in the importance of community involvement and the positive impact that can be created when people share their time, knowledge, and experiences to support others. I am motivated by the opportunity to contribute to the well-being of the community and help create spaces where people can learn, connect, and feel supported.

As a newcomer to Canada, I also saw volunteering as a great opportunity to become more involved in Canadian culture, improve my English skills, meet people from different countries and backgrounds, and build meaningful relationships within the community. It has been a very rewarding experience that has strengthened my sense of belonging and allowed me to grow both personally and professionally.

Can you share a story or instance where you felt you made an impact?

One of the most rewarding experiences has been working with people from different countries and cultural backgrounds in technology programs. Seeing them gain confidence as they learn to use their smartphones, explore useful applications, and develop digital skills that help them stay connected with family, access information, and navigate daily life makes me feel that I am making a meaningful difference.

It is especially rewarding to see participants become more confident and independent after learning something new. At the same time, I learn from their experiences and perspectives, making the exchange valuable and enriching for everyone involved.

Your favorite memory at MPNH?

My favourite memory is seeing participants' excitement and sense of accomplishment when they learn something new and realize that technology can be both accessible and empowering. I also appreciate the welcoming and supportive environment created by the staff, volunteers, and community members. It is very rewarding to be part of an organization that promotes inclusion, learning, and meaningful connections among people.

Thank you again for this recognition and for the opportunity to contribute to the MPNH community. I look forward to continuing to support your programs and initiatives.
