Get to know our volunteer of the month, Melany!
What do I do in my role as a volunteer?
I volunteer in multiple positions, with Food Fit in the kitchen, at Front desk on Tuesdays, and as a conversational buddy with the Better at Home Weekly Caller program.
When did you begin volunteering at MPNH?
I began volunteering 2 1/2 years ago with Better at Home, but I recently started coming into MPNH for the other two programs.
Why do you volunteer?
It first started out as a requirement for my schooling, but later is because the community is so welcoming and wonderful! I love helping people and making their day just a bit brighter, and they do the same for me.
Can you share a story or instance where you felt you made an impact?
Recently there was a big traffic jam and Omnia was stuck in Delta for my first Food Fit day. I got to know the kitchen pretty quickly and even though she was an hour late, we’re were able to finish the class 5 minutes late! My superpowers are in the kitchen! 😅
Your favorite memory at MPNH?
There are so many to choose from. But the one thing I really enjoy is that the seniors I call have helped me as much as I have helped them. Forming that connection means a lot to me and I hope they are better for it.
Feedback from staff/participants:
Melany has been such a wonderful part of our Friendly Phone Calls program! She’s been checking in with our seniors regularly for quite some time, always bringing kindness and care to every call. During the last heatwave, Melany’s thoughtful attention really stood out—she made sure our seniors were safe and supported when it mattered most. She’s also taken part in several trainings and always shows up with a warm and welcoming spirit. We're so lucky to have her as part of our neighbourhood house family!
