Multicultural Cooking Club: Celebrating Mexican Culture

Our Multicultural Cooking Club celebrated Mexican culture last June 22. There were more than 60 participants who enjoyed sharing chicken tinga, agua de jamaica (iced hibiscus tea), and rice pudding.

Colectivo Yollotl (@yollotlcolectivo), a Vancouver-based group of Mexican musicians, enthusiastically performed during the event. They are known to play traditional “Son Jarocho” music from the State of Veracruz in Mexico. Son Jarocho is deeply rooted in community life and often performed at festivals, celebrations, and social gatherings.

Everyone also had the chance to make their own Ojos de Dios, “God’s eyes,” which are ritual objects made by the Huichol Indigenous people of Mexico. The Huichol symbolism of the god’s eyes is primarily associated with the prayers for their children – prayers for a good long life, protection and to insure abundant crops.

Seeing all the smiles from the participants only prove that the event was a well celebrated one!
