Sandra as the new Volunteer Coordinator (Impact Story 2024 - 2025)

Every role is crucial, and each volunteer deserves to be celebrated for their invaluable contribution to Mount Pleasant Neighbourhood House.

Over the past few years, the volunteer coordinator position has seen several transitions. However, when Sandra Pahl, our Office Manager, stepped into the role in late October 2024, she brought much-needed stability and organization.

Taking on the role has been both personally and professionally rewarding for Sandra. She is grateful for the opportunity and the growth it has provided.

Like any new position, it came with its challenges. Sandra faced a steep learning curve, especially with the complex volunteer systems in place. One key issue was long wait times for new volunteers, as certain requirements needed to be met before they could begin. This led some applicants to move on to other organizations. To improve this, Sandra, along with Lam, our Office Assistant, streamlined the process by creating clearer instructions and timely reminders. This ensured all applicants, with or without translation support, could complete their applications more easily.

Despite the challenges, Sandra finds the most rewarding part of her role is working with the incredible volunteers. She feels privileged to collaborate with people who are eager to give back and learn. Their resilience and inspiring stories have deeply impacted her.

Sandra also shared that selecting a "Volunteer of the Month" is never easy, as many volunteers consistently go above and beyond. Whether it’s laundry, dishwashing, event setup, teaching English, leading yoga classes, or handling administrative tasks, every volunteer gives their best.

Ultimately, Sandra’s time as Volunteer Coordinator has not only strengthened the organization but also deepened her appreciation for the volunteers who dedicate their time and energy. Their commitment continues to inspire her, reminding her daily of the powerful impact of community and collective support.
