Get to know our volunteer of the month, Andrea!
What do I do in my role as a volunteer?
I volunteer at the front desk on Mondays, where I help people with questions, assist with line dancing registration, and support with whatever tasks need to be done. I have also volunteered on Monday evenings preparing dinner for the Indigenous community dinner. In addition, I have volunteered with the Entre Mujeres group, offering support wherever it is needed.
When did you begin volunteering at MPNH?
I began in January 2025.
Why do you volunteer?
I volunteer and I enjoy it because it allows me to help others and give back to the community. The time I dedicate to it feels meaningful and well spent. I also value the opportunity to build connections. Through volunteering at the front desk at Mount Pleasant Neighbourhood House in Vancouver, I’ve met wonderful and valuable people who have contributed to my growth as a person.
Can you share a story or instance where you felt you made an impact?
One instance where I felt I made an impact was during the Christmas event at Mount Pleasant Neighbourhood House. I participated both as a volunteer and as part of the community. I helped create the photo frame for the event, and even though it may seem like a small contribution, it made me very happy to see how much people enjoyed it. Seeing families and friends take pictures, laugh, and create memories together made me feel that I had contributed to something meaningful. It reminded me how collective work creates a space of joy and connection for everyone.
Your favorite memory at MPNH?
I truly have so many beautiful memories. I’ve met wonderful, valuable people and shared meaningful moments and conversations.
Maybe my favorite memory at MPNH was in 2024, when I facilitated a workshop for the first time called “Cuenta tu propia historia migratoria en un Fanzine" (Tell Your Own Migration Story in a Fanzine) for the Entre Mujeres group. Later, I had the opportunity to offer it again by myself. That experience filled my heart because I was able to go through such a beautiful creative process, one that undoubtedly helped others as well.
Thank you, MPNH. You have only brought joy into my life.
