Get to know our volunteer of the month, Elinor!

What do I do in my role as a volunteer?

As a volunteer, I tutor immigrant mothers over Zoom.  They often have their children with them.  I've taught all levels of English, but usually the mothers want to be able to converse with others and understand them.  Sometimes I prepare them for something specific, like talking to a teacher or preparing for an interview.

When did you begin volunteering at MPNH?

I can't remember when I started to volunteer; it must be between 5 to 10 years.  Morie may know.

Why do you volunteer?

I volunteer because I love to tutor English, and I feel I am being helpful to another person and their family. That makes me feel good. I try to be a friendly and useful presence in my students' lives.

Can you share a story or instance where you felt you made an impact?

I helped my current student to connect with the YMCA free classes, and now she follows their Pilates classes.   I hope in the future to help her connect to LINK classes.

Your favorite memory at MPNH?

I enjoy the tutor chats at MPNH.  They are so helpful in terms of new ideas and inspiration.  I also really like conversing with Morie; she is so competent, enthusiastic, and helpful.

Feedback from staff/participants:

Elly has been a dedicated tutor volunteer with our Family Literacy Outreach program for six years, generously supporting newcomer families as they build their English language skills and confidence. She currently works with a mother from Ukraine and her young child, exploring topics around celebrating International Women’s Day, navigating the library, and wondering together why it rains so much in Vancouver!

Beyond her volunteer work, Elly brings a rich love of music to her life with singing in a choir, and playing cello in an orchestra. She loves literature and writing, and deeply treasures time spent with her family. We are grateful for the care, creativity, and commitment she brings to our community.
