What do I do in my role as a volunteer?
As a volunteer, I help support community programs at MPNH by assisting staff, planning and setting up events, guiding participants, and helping activities run smoothly. I also work with other volunteers to welcome newcomers and make sure everyone feels included and comfortable.
When did you begin volunteering at MPNH?
I started volunteering at MPNH a little over two years ago, and since then I’ve been consistently involved in different programs and events.
Why do you volunteer?
I volunteer because I enjoy helping others and being part of a community. Volunteering has helped me grow as a leader and build confidence, and it also lets me give back to a place that supports so many people.
Can you share a story or instance where you felt you made an impact?
One moment that stands out was during a youth program where a new participant was really shy and unsure about joining in. I spent time talking with them, introducing them to others, and involving them in activities. By the end of the session, they were smiling, participating, and even made a few friends. Seeing that change made me realize how small actions can make a big difference.
Your favorite memory at MPNH?
My favorite memory at MPNH was the camping trip night where all of the participants and leaders sat next to the bonfire and were sharing stories and played mafia. It made me feel connected with others in a way I never felt before. It was a great time and after that we were stargazing and talking about endless possibilities out in the sky and how it connects with ourselves which brought tears down my eyes as I was reflecting on my life with leaders that I can share personal things with which I think one the most important things in life.
Feedback from staff/participants:
"Janav is a fantastic volunteer who has brought his skills, passion, and wonderful attitude to countless programs over the years at Mount Pleasant Neighbourhood House. From his work with the Youth Action Committee and the REAL anti-violence initiative, to his weekly support packaging bread for the community, Janav consistently shows up with dedication and heart. He is a highly valued volunteer, and we deeply appreciate everything he does!"
