Strengthening Through Change
This past year was a season of transformation for our Family & Friend Caregivers Connect program. With the arrival of a new program coordinator midway through the fiscal year, we experienced more than just change in leadership, we felt a renewal of vision and purpose. Fresh energy and ideas sparked new ways of supporting caregivers, creating a turning point that strengthened the foundation of care we provide while opening pathways for growth.
One of the clearest examples of this transformation was the Caregivers Summer Social in August 2024. What began as a gathering became a vibrant celebration of connection, joy, and creativity. Caregivers and care recipients shared food, laughter, and the experience of trying new activities, journaling, crafts, breathing exercises, tarot readings, and colouring. The event shifted the atmosphere from routine care to a collective moment of rest and delight, reminding caregivers that renewal is possible even in the midst of responsibility.
Building on that spirit, we introduced the Caregiver Hangout, a monthly program now held on the third Thursday of each month. Designed as a calm, welcoming space, the Hangout offers music, snacks, and gentle activities. More importantly, it transforms ordinary time into meaningful togetherness. By bringing caregivers and care recipients into the same space of relaxation, we have seen bonds deepen, isolation lessen, and a sense of belonging grow stronger.
Even small gestures carried transformative impact. During the holidays, we offered holiday goodies bags to caregivers who could not attend our seasonal celebration. These simple packages, shared with care recipients, became symbols of recognition and connection, reminders that caregivers are never alone in their journey.
Together, these initiatives reveal how transformation takes root: in new leadership, in shared experiences, and in the quiet yet powerful ways we honour caregivers and nurture their well-being.
