Family Literacy Week: Make mealtime family learning time at MPNH

To honour Family Literacy Week, British Columbia has set aside January 25 through February 1, 2026 , a province-wide recognition of how reading, learning, and language shape family life. Central to the week is Family Literacy Day on January 27, a nationally celebrated event led by ABC Life Literacy Canada that encourages families across Canada to learn together.

This year’s Family Literacy Week theme, “Make Mealtime Family Learning Time”, invites families to see shared meals as meaningful opportunities for learning, through cooking together, engaging in conversation, and practicing mindful eating.

At Mount Pleasant Neighbourhood House (MPNH), shared meals across generations are central to our work. Bringing people of all ages together around food creates space for meaningful connections, allowing younger community members to learn from elders while elders stay connected to younger generations. Many of our programs weave food and learning together, including:

Through these programs, mealtime becomes a powerful way to build relationships, share knowledge, and strengthen our community.

Decoda Literacy Solutions, one of MPNH’s valued community partners, is hosting a province-wide Family Literacy Week Contest that invites families to showcase how they turn mealtime into a learning experience. Families can participate by emailing a photo, drawing, or short story describing how they make mealtime family learning time to contest@decoda.ca. Individual participants have a chance to win a Family Literacy Kit, while classroom entries can receive a $100 Indigo gift card.
